Dr. Kartika, who serves as Managing Director of PT Multistrada Agro International, is a seasoned practitioner in industry and strategic management. She currently leads the company along with several subsidiaries and affiliated firms. With more than three decades of corporate experience, she has held numerous strategic leadership roles, enriching her perspective on leadership amid global dynamics.
UKDW Rector Wiyatiningsih opened the event by highlighting the impact of global economic and geopolitical shifts on higher education. She encouraged participants to broaden their leadership perspectives through the forum. She also expressed appreciation for the donation of two ambulances to Duta Wacana Hospital. “We are grateful for Ms. Kartika’s presence, which brings inspiration to us all,” she said.
In her presentation, Dr. Kartika emphasized that universities must keep pace with developments in business, economics, and politics. She stressed that leadership is not merely a position. “Leadership is not about a title, but about behavior. It must be embodied in every action,” she said. She added that leaders must take responsibility, confront challenges directly, and understand processes comprehensively.
Dr. Kartika further explained the concept of adaptive leadership as key to navigating the uncertainty of the VUCA era. She urged leaders to respond to change swiftly and appropriately. “We must be adaptive to our surroundings and courageous in responding beyond conventional patterns,” she noted. She also underscored the importance of data-driven experimentation. “Decisions must be supported by detailed data and sensitivity to both macro and micro dynamics,” she added.
In the context of higher education development, Dr. Kartika pointed to intensifying competition, particularly in attracting new students. She encouraged institutions to design innovative breakthrough strategies and strengthen management through adaptive leadership. She stressed that all adaptive measures must remain aligned with institutional vision and mission.
Dr. Kartika also highlighted the critical role of alumni success in shaping a university’s reputation. “The success of alumni enhances public trust in the institution,” she said. She emphasized the need for universities to support graduates in competing in the workforce. Additionally, she called on campuses to strengthen students’ sense of nationalism as part of character building, develop programs relevant to contemporary needs, and expand strategic partnerships to enhance networks and competitiveness.
In closing, Dr. Kartika reiterated that leaders in the VUCA era must continuously learn, understand details, and evaluate situations effectively. She emphasized the importance of stepping out of comfort zones and fostering team loyalty. “We must have the courage to leave behind unproductive habits,” she said.
She also noted that leadership transitions must be managed carefully to bridge generational gaps. Through this forum, UKDW reaffirmed its commitment to cultivating adaptive leadership capable of meeting future challenges.
