BPBD Yogyakarta Conducts Fire Protection System Briefing and Assessment at UKDW
Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) hosted officials from the Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD DIY) for a fire protection system briefing and assessment on Wednesday (March 11, 2026). The event took place at the Rev. Dr. Harun Hadiwijono Seminar Room and aimed to strengthen disaster preparedness across the campus.
During the session, Mahujud Sossitahadi, S.Sos., M.Si., a junior fire safety analyst at BPBD Yogyakarta, stressed that survival during disasters largely depends on an individual’s ability to protect themselves.
“People can survive disasters because they have the capacity to help themselves,” he said.
He encouraged educational institutions to foster a continuous culture of preparedness. One effective step, he explained, is holding regular disaster drills, ideally every six months. These simulations help members of the campus community understand evacuation procedures and improve their readiness in emergency situations.
Mahujud also noted that disaster preparedness can be evaluated through nine key indicators, including the readiness of human resources, the effectiveness of early warning systems, and the availability of disaster response facilities and infrastructure.
He further highlighted the importance of universities building strong partnerships with local governments and relevant agencies. Such collaboration enables faster, better-coordinated, and more effective disaster response. Institutional synergy, he added, is also a strategic way to promote a broader culture of disaster awareness across the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
In this context, UKDW is encouraged to take an active role in the regional disaster management framework. Strengthening campus fire protection systems is one of the key steps toward achieving zero fire incidents.
As part of the program, the BPBD team also conducted on-site inspections of several fire safety facilities across the campus. The inspection covered fire protection equipment as well as the readiness of supporting infrastructure.
The findings were followed by several notes and constructive recommendations from the BPBD team. These recommendations are expected to help UKDW evaluate and further strengthen its existing fire protection system.
Through this initiative, UKDW not only enhances its internal preparedness but also strengthens cooperation with regional disaster management authorities. The collaboration marks an important step toward creating a safer, more resilient campus that is better prepared to face potential disasters.
