The Faculty of Biotechnology of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta together with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia conducted the 2019 Climate Change Debate Competition on 14-15 December 2019.
Competing with senior high schools from Special Region of Yogyakarta, Central Java, Special Capital Region of Jakarta, and East Kalimantan, SMAN 1 Bantul team successfully snatched the first place.
“Bringing up the theme ‘Act to Save the Future’, through this Climate Change Debate Competition, participants are expected to be able to understand, comprehend, analyze, make a judgment, and formulate practical solutions in reducing and adapting to climate change,” said the Vice Dean for Students, Scholarship, and Alumni Affairs of the Faculty of Biotechnology, Drs. Djoko Rahardjo, M.Kes.
Furthermore, Djoko Rahardjo pointed out that these recent years, climate change has drawn the world’s attention, as the impacts escalate in different parts of the world, including Indonesia. Human resource development should be the focus of the climate change adaptation strategy. We need people who are not only professional but also have environmental awareness.
“Millennials as the future leaders are expected to bring change in tackling issues of development and environmental management to create their dream future. Ideas, lifestyles, acts of the young generations, which are creative, innovative, bold, assertive, and environmentally friendly are the key factors of life sustainability on earth. Nurturing millennials’ environmental awareness is expected to be one of the solutions in tackling environmental issues,” he added.
This competition has gained positive response from schools, the escort teachers, as well as participants. Keysar Khoirullah Hisam (a member of SMAN 1 Bantul team) said that the climate change issue is interesting because it has a wide impact on every aspect of life. “Through this debate, we can understand more about environmental degradation and dare to take initiative and action to save the environment,” he said.
