Inclusive Thematic Community Service Program (KKN Tematik Inklusif) #4, organized a workshop on basic orientation and mobility skills and sighted-guide techniques on June 6, 2026. Held at the UKDW campus and Galeria Mall Yogyakarta, the workshop was conducted in collaboration with Yaketunis Special School for the Visually Impaired (SLB Yaketunis) and the Yogyakarta chapter of the Indonesian Blind Association (Pertuni DIY).

A total of 67 students participating in the Inclusive Thematic Community Service Program and the Inclusive Product Design course took part in the training.

The workshop formed part of the preparation program for students carrying out community engagement activities at SLB Negeri Pembina Yogyakarta from March to June 2026. Through the training, participants not only learned practical techniques for assisting people with visual impairments but also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of creating inclusive and accessible environments.

Winta Tridhatu Satwikasanti, S.Ds., M.Sc., Ph.D., coordinator of UKDW’s Inclusive Thematic Community Service Program, explained that the workshop aimed to introduce students to the daily experiences of the blind and visually impaired community while equipping them with essential skills for effective interaction and assistance.

“We hope this experience will support students in developing disability-inclusive innovations and designing advocacy campaigns that are more responsive to community needs,” she said.

The training was led by Ambarsih, S.Pd., Principal of SLB Yaketunis, and Dwi Nugroho, A.Md., Chair of Pertuni DIY, who served as speakers and mentors. They introduced participants to the fundamentals of safe and effective sighted-guide techniques for assisting people with visual impairments.

Following the classroom session, students participated in hands-on practice at the Agape Atrium on the UKDW campus. Working in pairs, one participant assumed the role of a person with visual impairment by wearing a blindfold, while the other acted as a sighted guide. Together, they practiced a range of everyday situations, including sitting on chairs and sofas, opening and closing doors, navigating stairs, using elevators, and entering and exiting motorcycles and cars.

To provide a more authentic learning experience, participants then moved into a public setting for mobility practice. They walked to Galeria Mall Yogyakarta while applying sighted-guide techniques, crossing streets at pedestrian crossings, and using escalators and elevators. Throughout the activity, students regularly switched roles to gain insight into both the experience of providing assistance and navigating public spaces without sight.

The training concluded with a lunch session completed without visual assistance, challenging participants to rely on their other senses and encouraging greater independence and awareness.

According to Dr. Patricia Dissy Andrea, MHPE, Deputy Coordinator of the Inclusive Thematic Community Service Program, the workshop achieved its intended objectives and received positive feedback from participants. Many students reported gaining a new appreciation for the challenges faced by people with visual impairments in their daily lives.

“Many participants shared that the simulation not only provided practical skills for becoming effective sighted guides but also fostered a much deeper sense of empathy and awareness. They were able to experience firsthand how people with visual impairments navigate everyday life and interact with their surroundings,” she said.

Through this hands-on experience, students participating in the Inclusive Thematic Community Service Program and the Inclusive Product Design course are expected to become more confident in practicing inclusive interaction and recognizing the diversity of human abilities. The experience is also expected to inspire the development of more accessible innovations, products, and systems while strengthening advocacy efforts for persons with disabilities in society.

By dissy | Ed.
