The initiative brings together 14 participants from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, including pastors, academics, and practitioners from churches and UEM partner institutions.

The training is designed to equip participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills for supporting trauma survivors at both individual and community levels. The program is delivered in three phases: October 18–November 17, 2025; April 13–May 8, 2026; and September 28–October 16, 2026.

As a global communion of churches spanning Germany, Africa, and Asia, UEM initiated the program to strengthen the capacity of church workers and community facilitators in responding to various forms of crisis and trauma.

Rev. Paulus S. Widjaja, MAPS, Ph.D., the program coordinator from UKDW, explained that the training goes beyond theoretical understanding by emphasizing practical skills that can be applied directly in ministry and community settings.

“Participants are equipped with the ability to recognize trauma and provide psychological first aid to survivors within church ministries and faith-based organizations,” he said.

The program features instructors from the UKDW Faculty of Theology alongside academics and practitioners from Indonesia and abroad. The curriculum is designed using a holistic and contextual approach that integrates perspectives from theology, spirituality, psychology, psychiatry, traumatology, and a range of social issues relevant to the Asian context.

Rev. Godwin D. Ampony, Head of UEM’s Department of International Diakonia, emphasized that the program adopts a multidisciplinary approach to trauma recovery. In addition to combining psychosocial support, spiritual care, and community-based accompaniment, the training encourages intercultural learning and ecumenical collaboration among UEM members and partner institutions throughout Asia.

Participants have reported significant benefits from the program. Rev. Callum R. Tabada of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) said that the training would help his church provide more effective support for congregations affected by both natural disasters and human-caused crises.

Meanwhile, Deaconess Derselli P. Silitonga of the HKBP Diaconal College shared that the program had provided new insights and inspired her to further integrate compassion and empathy into her daily ministry.

By combining academic knowledge with hands-on practice, the Trauma Healing Training for Community Facilitators program aims to develop facilitators who are capable of supporting trauma survivors through a holistic approach while making a positive impact on the communities they serve across Asia.

By Pemberian | Ed.
