(UKDW) welcomed peace activist and former terrorism convict Joko Triharmanto, widely known as Bang Jack, as a guest speaker at a Pancasila Education Seminar titled “Challenges for Young People in Instilling, Strengthening, and Preserving Pancasila Values.” The seminar was held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Koinonia Auditorium.

Serving as the closing activity for the Pancasila Education course in the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, the seminar encouraged students to strengthen their understanding of national values and develop critical thinking skills in responding to the challenges of the digital era.

Through the event, UKDW provided students with a contextual learning experience that highlighted the relevance of Pancasila values in contemporary society. In addition to enriching students’ academic understanding, the seminar encouraged them to become a generation capable of safeguarding unity, diversity, and peace in Indonesia.

During his presentation, Bang Jack shared his personal journey, describing how he was exposed to radical ideologies and eventually became involved in a terrorist network linked to the perpetrators of the 2002 Bali bombings. He explained that his involvement began with exposure to information and recordings of religiously charged conflicts, which fueled anger and led him to embrace extremist ideologies without critically evaluating the information he received.

According to Bang Jack, radicalization can take root when individuals are exposed to only one perspective and lack the ability to assess information critically and responsibly. He therefore urged young people to continue developing critical thinking skills while upholding the values of humanity and national unity.

“When someone accepts only a single perspective without thinking critically, they become more vulnerable to ideologies that promote violence,” he told UKDW students.

Bang Jack also recounted the long process of transformation he underwent after serving six years in prison. He explained that the change in his outlook did not happen overnight but emerged through deep personal reflection, family support, and a commitment to rebuilding his life in a more positive direction.

He emphasized the important role his family played in that transformation. The support of his parents and wife helped him understand the consequences of his past actions and motivated him to pursue a life that contributes positively to society.

Today, Bang Jack is an active speaker at forums focusing on national values, character education, and deradicalization. Through his life story, he encourages students to promote unity, respect diversity, and approach the vast amount of information circulating in digital spaces with greater wisdom and discernment.

The Pancasila Education Seminar reflects UKDW’s commitment to developing graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also possess strong character, civic awareness, and social responsibility. Through learning activities that address contemporary challenges, the university continues to encourage students to become agents of peace who can make meaningful contributions to society and the nation.

The event also reaffirmed UKDW’s role as a higher education institution committed to fostering the values of Pancasila, tolerance, and diversity among young people, equipping them to navigate the complexities of an increasingly dynamic future.

By moses | Ed.
