Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) reinforced its global engagement by hosting 11 students from Goshen College, United States, through the Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program as part of the Study-Service Term (SST) 2026.<\/p>\n

Running from January 12 to February 13, 2026, the intensive program was organized by UKDW\u2019s Language Training Center (PPB). Participants attended 17 sessions of Indonesian language classes, each lasting 120 minutes, designed to strengthen their speaking and listening skills.<\/p>\n

To support real-world language use, the program combined classroom instruction with hands-on cultural activities and a language buddies program. Through this scheme, students practiced Indonesian informally with local student mentors for up to 12 hours, creating opportunities for authentic conversation outside the classroom.<\/p>\n

Experiential learning was also a key component of the program. During a cooking class on January 20, participants prepared fried rice, omelets, and wedang serai jahe, while learning vocabulary related to ingredients, tools, and cooking instructions.<\/p>\n

Students also practiced everyday communication in campus shops and the UKDW cafeteria, asking about prices, ordering food, and expressing preferences in Indonesian\u2014activities that helped build both fluency and confidence.<\/p>\n

An end-of-program evaluation found the initiative effective in improving students\u2019 language skills and confidence, though some participants noted that the grammar component was challenging within the short timeframe. In response, PPB plans to refine the course design to better balance grammar instruction and vocabulary development.<\/p>\n

The BIPA SST 2026 program highlights UKDW\u2019s commitment to international collaboration and cross-cultural learning, using language education as a bridge between Indonesian culture and global communities.<\/p>\n
