Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) marked a significant academic milestone by formally conferring a professorship on Rizaldy Taslim Pinzon, recognizing him as Professor of Neuropathic Pain. The inauguration ceremony was held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Koinonia Auditorium, UKDW.

The appointment represents an important academic achievement for Prof. Rizaldy and reaffirms UKDW’s commitment to advancing scholarship grounded in humanitarian values—particularly in the fields of health and public service. The university continues to strengthen its contribution to society, including advocacy for individuals living with chronic pain, a condition that often remains underrecognized.

In his inaugural lecture, “Exploring the Mystery of Neuropathic Pain: From Mechanisms to Precision Therapy,” Prof. Rizaldy invited the audience to view pain not merely as a clinical issue, but as a complex human experience. He emphasized that although pain is often invisible, its impact on daily functioning, social relationships, and overall quality of life can be profound.

Neuropathic pain is a form of chronic pain caused by damage or dysfunction within the nervous system, affecting either peripheral or central nerves. Unlike pain resulting from tissue injury or inflammation, neuropathic pain may occur without an obvious physical cause.

Patients experience a wide range of symptoms, including burning sensations, electric shock–like pain, numbness, and spontaneous pain without external triggers. “Many patients present with pain that is difficult to describe and often poorly understood by those around them,” Prof. Rizaldy noted.

In Indonesia, the prevalence of neuropathic pain continues to increase alongside rising rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, stroke, chemotherapy-related complications, and nerve injuries. Despite this trend, neuropathic pain remains frequently underdiagnosed and inadequately managed.

Prof. Rizaldy explained that one of the major challenges in treating neuropathic pain is the wide variation in patient responses to therapy. Even patients with similar diagnoses may respond very differently to the same treatment.

This variability arises because neuropathic pain is not a single, uniform condition. Patients with the same underlying cause may experience different pain characteristics driven by distinct biological mechanisms. “Neuropathic pain has many faces. Behind similar symptoms, the underlying mechanisms can differ significantly,” he explained.

He emphasized the importance of applying precision medicine in the management of neuropathic pain. This approach tailors treatment to individual patient characteristics, including identifying pain phenotypes or symptom patterns that reflect specific underlying mechanisms. Such personalization enables more targeted therapy, reduces unnecessary medication use, and minimizes the risk of adverse effects.

Within the context of healthcare delivery in Indonesia, Prof. Rizaldy also highlighted the need to improve understanding of neuropathic pain at the primary care level. Differences in language and medical terminology, he noted, often hinder effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients. Developing neuropathic pain assessment tools in the Indonesian language is therefore a strategic step toward enabling patients to communicate their experiences more accurately and clearly.

Concluding his lecture, Prof. Rizaldy reflected on the role of academics in an era of rapid advances in artificial intelligence. He argued that scientific progress is driven not only by the ability to provide quick answers, but by the courage to continue asking critical questions. “There is a sense of unease because many patients still do not experience optimal pain relief, and much remains that we do not yet fully understand,” he said.

He quoted a line from Indonesian poet Chairil Anwar—“The work is not finished, not even close”—as a reminder that the academic journey is a lifelong process shaped by research, teaching, and dialogue across generations.

In her remarks, UKDW Rector Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih stated that the inauguration serves as an inspiration for the development of future professors at UKDW. She also expressed appreciation that Prof. Rizaldy is the first professor in the UKDW Faculty of Medicine since Prof. Siagian’s retirement.

According to the Rector, health sciences have direct relevance to every aspect of human life. Expertise in neuropathic pain therefore strengthens UKDW’s position as a Sustainable Entrepreneurial Research University (SERU), in alignment with the institution’s core values. “Prof. Rizaldy’s achievement reinforces UKDW’s commitment to ensuring that academic knowledge produces meaningful societal impact, in line with the mission of higher education in Indonesia,” she said.

UKDW expressed its pride in this accomplishment and hopes that the appointment of a Professor of Neuropathic Pain will further expand the university’s academic, humanitarian, and healthcare contributions to society.

W-ID: mpk | Ed.
