For three days, from November 1 to 3, 2025, the students took part in an academic excursion — a field study designed to bridge architectural theory with the everyday realities of a modern metropolis.

The program was created to broaden students’ on-site learning experience and deepen their understanding of urban life and spatial dynamics. Through direct observation, participants learned to read the behaviors of city dwellers, recognize zoning systems, and interpret spatial characteristics across multiple scales — from meso to macro. The excursion encouraged them to view the city not simply as a collection of skyscrapers, but as a living organism that continuously evolves alongside its people.

Learning from Public Spaces

The journey began at Tebet Eco Park, a green public space that showcases collaboration between residents and the government in restoring the ecological function of an area once divided by a main road. From this city park, students learned that public spaces are not just places for recreation, but also expressions of social participation, reconciling infrastructure and ecology in a shared environment.

Sudirman: The Face of Modernity and Sustainable Mobility

From lush greenery, the group moved to Sudirman Corridor, a district that embodies Jakarta’s modern identity. Here, students explored the great street concept introduced by Allan B. Jacobs (1995).

Along Sudirman, various modes of public transportation are integrated into a single network that reflects the principles of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) — an approach to city planning that promotes sustainable mobility, spatial efficiency, and pedestrian-friendly environments.

The MRT connects underground routes from the central business district to Bundaran HI, while the LRT enhances connectivity between districts above ground. The Jetliner Connector (Jetlinco) further smooths intermodal transfers.

Beyond being a transportation corridor, Sudirman also serves as a vibrant urban space. Its wide sidewalks, bike lanes, and public facilities — such as the Pinisi Pedestrian Bridge (JPO) and GBK City Forest — demonstrate harmony between public transit and public life. Students observed that urban mobility is not just about moving efficiently, but about creating an inclusive, comfortable, and human-centered city experience.

Mega Kuningan: The Dynamics of a Global City

At Mega Kuningan, students encountered another urban narrative — the city as a global economic landscape in constant motion. Here, they observed how zoning and spatial hierarchy reflect macro-scale planning principles, resonating with The Elements of Urban Design, which emphasize coherence among building mass, street orientation, and human activity.

BRIlian Tower: Envisioning a Sustainable Future

The excursion concluded at BRIlian Tower, a landmark that opened new perspectives on integrating sustainability into modern architecture. Students studied the application of green building and smart building concepts — from energy-efficient systems to utility networks and advanced building safety technologies.

For these aspiring architects, BRIlian Tower stood not merely as a symbol of innovation, but as evidence that future architecture can thrive in harmony with the environment and technology.

W-ID & Doc: IID-MKS | Ed.
