To ensure its sustainability, strategic efforts are needed to maintain its cultural and historical significance.

Recognizing this potential, a research team from Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) in Yogyakarta, consisting of Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih, S.T., M.T., Dra. Agustini Dyah Respati, MBA, and two students, conducted a study titled “Creative Placemaking: An Approach to Preserving the World Cultural Heritage of the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis.” The research focused on Jalan Margo Utomo, stretching from Tugu Monument to Tugu Station, a prominent area known for its rich cultural atmosphere and vibrant local experiences.

According to Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih, the location was selected based on its role as a key destination offering cultural and gastronomic experiences. The study aimed to explore how public spaces can be optimized for tourism activities, how architectural elements respond to visitor engagement, and how spatial and visual interactions contribute to the sustainability of this heritage area.

The research found that public spaces along Jalan Margo Utomo play a crucial role in shaping tourism dynamics. The area around Tugu Monument serves as a popular gathering spot, drawing visitors due to its significance as a landmark of Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, the pedestrian corridor leading to Tugu Station offers a different experience, characterized by street vendors and visitors pausing to enjoy local food. The presence of park benches, trees, and other urban elements fosters social interaction, making the space more engaging. The railway crossing near Tugu Station also emerges as an attraction, where visitors often stop to observe the passing trains while experiencing street food culture.

The study highlighted the interactive nature of public spaces, particularly in areas where street vendors operate. At Tugu Monument, visitor engagement revolves around the historical and symbolic aspects of the landmark, creating a distinct spatial experience. Near Tugu Station, the combination of street food and railway activity adds another layer of interaction. The pedestrian area, especially in front of Hotel Harper, provides a setting where tourism blends seamlessly with the daily life of local residents, offering an authentic experience for visitors.

Findings from this research underscore the concept of creative placemaking, where public spaces are shaped by both social interaction and economic activities. By involving local communities and visitors, these spaces evolve into dynamic environments that contribute to tourism development. The growing presence of street vendors in Jalan Margo Utomo reflects how the local economy adapts to opportunities within this heritage zone, fostering a reciprocal relationship between vendors and visitors.

As tourism continues to flourish in Yogyakarta, this study provides valuable insights into sustainable urban space utilization. The research emphasizes the importance of designing public spaces that not only support tourism and the creative economy but also maintain the cultural essence of Yogyakarta’s heritage sites. The findings could serve as a model for similar heritage conservation efforts worldwide, ensuring that historical areas remain vibrant and meaningful for future generations. [jonathan/trans.drr]

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[et_pb_section fb_built="1" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_row column_structure="1_3,1_3,1_3" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://ukdw.my.id/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/03/UKDW-Lecturers-Preserve-Cultural-Heritage-Through-Creative-Placemaking-1.jpg" title_text="UKDW Lecturers Preserve Cultural Heritage Through Creative Placemaking-1" show_in_lightbox="on" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://ukdw.my.id/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/03/UKDW-Lecturers-Preserve-Cultural-Heritage-Through-Creative-Placemaking-2.jpeg" title_text="UKDW Lecturers Preserve Cultural Heritage Through Creative Placemaking-2" show_in_lightbox="on" …

[5

post-5308","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-berita
["GET
