\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In response to the increasing prevalence of online fraud, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta has partnered with the DIY Regional Police to host an event titled \u201cSocialization on Preventing Online and Offline Fraud.\u201d This event took place on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the Koinonia Auditorium. With the theme \u201cSmart Learning Campaign: Empowering the Community to Avoid Online and Offline Fraud,\u201d the initiative aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of fraud among the UKDW academic community.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0AKBP Kurniati, S.Sos., M.A., Head of the Sub-Directorate for Community Security and Order Development (Kasubdit Bhabinkamtibmas), served as a resource speaker. She discussed various methods of online fraud, including phishing, social media scams, and safe online transaction practices. Kurniati emphasized the importance of vigilance in recognizing fraudulent schemes, especially given the rapid advancement of technology.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cThe evolution of technology is a blessing, making our lives easier. However, some individuals exploit these advancements for malicious purposes, contributing to rising criminal activity. Online platforms have become new grounds for various criminal acts, such as investment fraud, buying and selling scams, and other fraudulent transactions,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Kurniati further explained that fraudsters often take advantage of public ignorance and negligence. She stressed the importance of verifying information before conducting transactions or providing personal data online. Moreover, she highlighted the need for heightened vigilance and digital literacy among the community, particularly among youth, to prevent them from becoming victims of online fraud.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The socialization event also introduced the “cekajadulu”<\/strong> application, launched by the DIY Regional Police. This app allows users to check phone numbers and bank account details to determine whether they have been associated with online fraud. In addition to preventive measures, the app facilitates users in reporting suspicious phone numbers and bank accounts linked to fraudulent activities.<\/p>\n \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0UKDW Rector Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih, S.T., M.T., expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the DIY Regional Police’s initiative aimed at preventing both online and offline fraud. \u201cThis event is crucial, especially in light of the rapid technological developments that make information increasingly accessible, which can also be misused. Our goal is to equip everyone to avoid falling victim to fraud, thereby contributing to a more secure and prosperous community,\u201d she remarked.
