The event officially opened by the Rector of DWCU, Ir. Henry Feriadi, MSc. Ph.D. was conducted at Rev. Dr. Harun Hadiwijono, Hagios Building, 3rd Floor, DWCU, from 08.30 to 15.00. Fifty participants from various higher education institutions and middle schools attended the workshop.

The workshop consisted of two sessions. The first session featured Dawn Bikowski, Ph.D., the Director of the English Language Improvement Program and professor of language at Ohio University, USA. She talked about how to apply Global Englishes in designing language tasks. She added that the purpose of English as second language learning like that in Indonesia should be on comprehensibility rather than attaining native users’ proficiency, which rather than motivating learners, may make them anxious and stressed out in language classes. In addition, more and more people speaking various mother tongues use English for promoting their countries’ cultures and potentials rather than orientating themselves to the cultures of native users of English such as Americans, British, and Australians.

In the second session, V. Triprihatmini, M. Hum., M.A. from Sanata Dharma University delivered a talk on how educators can make learning instructions engaging for 21st century learners with all their characteristics. She further emphasised that educators are expected to improve their questioning skills to further enhance learners’ understanding and to improve their critical thinking. The participants were invited to have small group discussions on making and analysing closed/open questions as well as surface/deep questioning.

“[It gives] reinforcement that grammar teaching is still encouraged, but the approach/goal should be more contextually communicative,” said Gita Hastuti from Satya Wacana Christian University on her general impression of the workshop.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The English Education Department of Duta Wacana Christian University (DWCU) conducted the 4th Workshop on Teaching Excellence with the theme “Task Design and Techniques to Engage Students in the Perspective of Global Englishes” on Thursday, 12 July, 2018.

[5
12,15,10,14,11,16,17
post-424","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-berita","tag-duta-wacana","tag-duta-wacana-christian-university","tag-dwcu","tag-english-education-department","tag-ukdw","tag-workshop","tag-workshop-on-teaching-excellence
["GET
