In that research, he looked at the use of local words and patterns in an English language newspaper to identify the characteristics of what he called Indonesian English. “A new variety of English is born whenever this language is used among non-native speakers of the same community to express their shared identity, and that is the case for Indonesian English”, he claims. By the end of the conference, it was announced that the paper won the first place of de Gruyter Best Paper Award.

This 12th International FLC was attended by more than 420 linguists and language teaching practitioners from around the world. Not only did the conference consist of paper presentations but it also included poster presentations on various topics. Those speakers were Ahmar Mahboob (University of Sydney, Australia), Willy Renandya (National Institute of Education, Singapore), Gerard Docherty (Griffith University, Australia), Kofi Yakpo (Hong Kong University), Azirah Hashim (UM), and Elaine Espindola (Federal University of Paraiba, Brazil).

According to Stefanie Pillai, the organizing chair of FLC 2018, the conference’s mission is to give free access to researchers and practitioners in the area of language sciences to share their best practices, studies, and perspectives.
