Two students from Universitas Kristan Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta emerged as the winners of the 3rd Scranton Essay Contest, which revolved around the theme “What is Your Internal Strength and Power to Overcome Challenges in Today\u2019s World?”. This international competition was organized by the Scranton Women\u2019s Leadership Center, South Korea. As victors, these UKDW students were awarded a Scranton scholarship for one year along with an additional scholarship of US$500. The winning students are Adelia Cristyana Dewanti from the Information Systems Program in the Faculty of Information Technology and Linar Moranggun Simamora from the Management Program in the Faculty of Business.<\/p>\n
In her essay titled “Women and Discrimination: Internal Motivation Empowered by Maternal Wisdom to Face Challenges in Difficult Situations,” Adelia delves into strategies for confronting life’s challenges by tapping into the inner strength instilled by her mother since childhood. “The habits instilled by my mother from my early years have had a profound impact on shaping my inner strength to tackle future problems,” she elaborated. Adelia also advocates for women worldwide to embrace bravery and resilience in navigating life’s obstacles. “I aspire for this essay to serve as a source of inspiration for women across the globe,” she remarked.<\/p>\n
Throughout the essay writing process, Adelia received guidance and mentorship from Drs. Jong Jek Siang, M.Sc. (Lecturer in Information Systems) and Arida Susyetina, S.S., M.A. (Lecturer in English Language Education). “With exceptional guidance and support from Mr. Siang and Ms. Arida, I triumphed in this essay competition. Credit is also due to the prayers of my mother and close relatives who consistently encourage positive endeavors,” Adelia acknowledged.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, in her essay titled “Overcoming Obstacles with Persistence and Courage: Pursuing Education Through Scholarship,” Linar shares her journey of perseverance in pursuing higher education. “The theme of this year’s competition resonates deeply with my educational journey\u2014a journey fraught with challenges until I finally attained college-level education at UKDW,” she detailed.<\/p>\n
Linar recounts her struggles in continuing her education, facing numerous rejections until opting for a gap year. Linar then channeled her determination into exploring scholarship opportunities in the Online Scholarship Competition (OSC). The arduous process shaped Linar into a resilient individual. “My parents’ resilience in meeting daily needs instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and striving for success,” she shared.<\/p>\n
Linar, who once nearly lost hope of attending college, has now realized her dream through the OSC scholarship. “This serves as testament to the real power of faith for those who believe. The success in the 3rd Scranton Essay Contest serves as motivation for me to persist, hone my skills through various activities, and strive for a brighter future,” Linar concluded.
