Ir. Eko Prawoto, M.Arch., IAI., and a famous dance artist pioneering the traditional two-face cross-gender dance, Didik Nini Thowok. Those workshops were organized in order to help students experience and get to know more about the Indonesian way of life through various fields, including arts and architecture.

On Monday, February 4, 2019, three GC students and two supervisors visited Eko’s home and studio to attend his workshop on Indonesian architecture and traditional tools. At his home, Eko preserves buildings and restores structures which are eco-friendly and close to nature. He believes that instead of going against nature, architecture should be in harmony with it. This view, according to Eko, is well reflected in the traditional buildings and tools of the locals. For that reason, not only does he preserve traditional buildings and structures, but he also keeps a collection of traditional tools in a museum called “The Museum of Ordinary Things”.

The workshop started with an introduction by Eko Prawoto himself followed with a Q-and-A session about his works. After a little bit of sightseeing around the house and studio, the students were given a presentation on the history and development of architecture in Indonesia. In the presentation, Eko stressed the importance of defending local wisdom and relearning its appreciable values. Besides exhibiting the local wisdom through his house and large collection of traditional tools, Eko also invited the students to observe the traditional techniques of tool making demonstrated at his blacksmith shop.

Four days later, on February 8, 2019, the students made a visit to Didik Nini Thowok Dance Studio. At the studio, they listened to Didik’s presentation on his philosophy of art, how he started his career as a professional dance artist, what made him special and different from other dancers, and his notable works. Didik is a multi-talented artist who masters various forms of traditional dance in Indonesia, such as Central Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, and Cirebonese. Quite often he combines those traditions with other forms of dance from another countries. To help the students visualize some concepts which were new to them, Didik also demonstrated some dance examples during his presentation.

In the second half of the workshop, Didik took the students on a short tour around the house and studio to view his vast collection of masks and costumes which he often used to perform. As a professional dancer and choreographer, Didik Nini Thowok has received lots of awards nationally and internationally. By attending the workshop, the students had the chance not only to talk to him in person, but more importantly to learn about Indonesian culture from his perspective.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[5
11
post-1184","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-berita","tag-ukdw
["GET
