In order to achieve that goal, the students are asked to visit and observe the teaching method and media used by the teachers in English Language Training International (ELTI). ELTI is famously known as a private school that helps students to understand English easily. Not only that, it has rich teaching media. Spending three hours in a row on Wednesday (26/09) with Mr. Aris and Ms. Erni gave the EED students more knowledge about the world of teaching.

First of all, the talk was started with explaining about the teaching method by Mr. Aris. ELTI teachers have used presentation, practice, and production (PPP) method for a long time to teach their students. PPP method focuses on the form of English language such as grammar, vocabulary, and accuracy. For instance, when the topic is about physical appearance, then the teacher should start with elicitation. As the topic is about physical appearance, the teachers in ELTI tend to bring some colorful pictures and ask the students to describe about the person in those pictures. Actually, this kind of activity is like a pre-task where the teacher has to open the lesson using that technique in order to know what the students have known and they do not know yet. Also, it can attract the students’ attention. Then, elicitation is followed by ‘presentation’ where the teachers have to introduce the form of English language. It can be grammar or vocabulary. After knowing the language forms, the students are asked to ‘practice’ what they have learned. As an example, the students have to describe the physical appearance of the person in a picture. Then the students have to say the correct grammar form, like she has brown hair. If the students are incorrect, the teacher can still assist them. Yet, when it comes to ‘production’, the students have to do the exercise by themselves without the help of the teacher. Moreover, immersing EED students in ELTI makes them learn a lot about PPP method deeply.

The second talk was delivered by Ms. Erni who is one of the teachers in ELTI. She did not talk too much about the media, but she asked the students to see the conventional media that the ELTI teachers always use to teach their students. EED students were very impressed when they first came into the media room. There are thousands of media there. How lucky they are to get Task and Media Design class which is taught by Ms. Pipit. EED students not only learned the theory of conventional media in the classroom, but also had a chance to see and touch them directly. Surprisingly, most the media are very simple but very useful. Even, Ms. Erny also taught the students about how to create their own media using cards in general. Basically, in Task and Media Design class, Ms. Pipit has taught EED students about it. Additionally, she usually reminds her students to always give clear instructions in designing a task. It is the same with what they learned in ELTI. Ms. Erni also said that if you want to give a game that uses conventional media, you must give clear instructions. Even though there are some students who already know about game or activity, as a teacher you cannot assume that the students have understood without listening to the teachers’ instructions.

Learning about those teaching methods and the media that the ELTI teachers use, it may give the suggestions for the students who want be a future teacher. First, as the processes to become a teacher, indeed we have to really know and understand the pedagogical knowledge. It means that teachers have to create effective teaching and learning environments for all students. Particularly, when we are going to teach children. If you are a teacher later on, you must try to find and create your teaching media by yourself. Ms. Erni said, “Everything can be media as long as you use it creatively.” It depends on the teacher him/herself. The second suggestion is you can use PPP method to teach primary school students. Most of the Indonesian students learn English as their foreign language. Therefore, it is your responsibility to introduce the language forms of English even though some of them have known about it. Through that three-hour observation that EED students have got in ELTI, there was a quote from Ms. Erni’s talk. She said “fun but also useful activities”. It is obviously stated that fun activities are needed in the teaching and learning processes. Thus, as a future teacher, you have to consider whether the students really understand the lesson through my media or not.

To conclude all of the things which have explained above, there are three important things to be restated. First, Ms. Aris has shared a lot about PPP method. It aims to let the students really understand the form of English language itself. Then it is followed by Ms. Erni’s talk. She taught about the teaching media which ELTI teachers always use in the classroom. Also, one thing you have to note from her lesson is that media come from the surrounding. We can create our own media as our teaching tools by ourselves.
