UKDW and PolyU Finalize Preparations for ISL Eye Care 2026 Program Serving 1,900 Students in Yogyakarta
Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have finalized preparations for the implementation of the International Service Learning (ISL) Eye Care 2026 program through a pre-visit conducted in Yogyakarta on June 2–3, 2026.
The visit was organized to ensure that all aspects of the program are ready ahead of its implementation, scheduled for July 18–28, 2026. Representing PolyU’s School of Optometry, Savio Lee traveled to Yogyakarta to coordinate with UKDW’s Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) on various technical and operational aspects of the program.
During the visit, representatives from UKDW and PolyU also conducted site visits to the schools that will participate in the program. The visits were aimed at strengthening coordination and finalizing preparations with school administrators.
A total of nine schools will take part in ISL Eye Care 2026: SD Budi Utama, SD Joannes Bosco, SD Bopkri Gondolayu, SMP Kalam Kudus, SMP Budya Wacana, SMP Stella Duce 2, SMP Bopkri 1, SMP Bopkri 2, and SMP Bopkri 3.
Through the program, UKDW and PolyU aim to provide eye health screenings for approximately 1,900 students. The primary activity will be comprehensive vision examinations designed to help students identify potential vision and eye health issues at an early stage.
The screenings will include a range of assessments, including distance vision tests, near vision tests, depth perception (stereopsis) evaluations, color vision testing, strabismus examinations, intraocular pressure measurements, and comprehensive eye health assessments.
According to Savio Lee, the screening program is intended not only to help students understand their visual health but also to raise awareness about the importance of eye care.
“We hope that through these vision screenings, students will gain a better understanding of their vision and eye health status, while also learning how to properly care for and maintain healthy eyes,” Lee said.
ISL Eye Care 2026 will bring together participants from different countries and academic disciplines. A total of 140 PolyU students will collaborate with 59 UKDW students from various academic programs. In addition to assisting with eye examinations, the students will provide educational sessions on the importance of eye health and proper eye care practices.
Through this international partnership, UKDW and PolyU aim not only to improve eye health among schoolchildren but also to provide students with meaningful service-learning experiences. The program is expected to deliver tangible benefits to the community while strengthening academic collaboration and community engagement between the two universities.
By combining academic expertise with community service, ISL Eye Care 2026 reflects the shared commitment of UKDW and PolyU to creating a lasting positive impact on education and public health in Indonesia.
