In an era of globalization and rapid technological advancements, intellectual property (IP) has become a strategic asset in driving economic growth, innovation, and national competitiveness. As centers of education and research, universities play a crucial role in producing high-value innovations. Therefore, it is essential for academic communities to understand the concepts, regulations, and protection mechanisms related to intellectual property, including copyrights, industrial designs, and patents.
Recognizing this importance, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, organized a seminar titled “Building Intellectual Property Awareness: Understanding Copyright, Industrial Design, and Patents for UKDW’s Academic Community.” Initiated by the Centre of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Centrino), the event was held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Rev. Dr. Harun Hadiwijono Seminar Room, UKDW.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Rosa Delima, UKDW Vice Rector for Academic and Research Affairs, emphasized the significance of innovation as an integral part of the university’s three core missions: education, research, and community service. “Protecting intellectual property is crucial in ensuring that innovations benefit the university and society at large, particularly in increasing the number of registered patents,” she stated.
Ruslinda Dwi Wahyuni, S.S., M.Si., LL.M., a senior industrial design examiner from DJKI, delivered a presentation on copyright and industrial design, covering protection systems and strategies for IP registration. “A lack of awareness and education on IP filing and management remains a major challenge in academia. This often hinders recognition and utilization of intellectual works produced by academic communities,” she explained.
Ruslinda further stressed the need to enhance human resource competencies and raise public awareness, as gaps in understanding persist among academics, researchers, and students regarding the importance of protecting intellectual assets. She highlighted the shared responsibility of fostering a unified understanding of intellectual property protection.
The seminar also featured Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., the inventor of GeNose and Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). Sharing his experience in innovation commercialization and patent downstreaming, Prof. Kuwat underscored the role of business model innovation in bridging inventions with industry. “Collaboration is the key to ensuring that innovations are effectively absorbed into the market,” he concluded.
Through this seminar, UKDW reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening intellectual property protection within the academic sphere. Ongoing education and outreach efforts will be fundamental in cultivating an academic ecosystem that values and safeguards intellectual property. [centrino.amp/trans.drr]
