Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) has prioritized waste management and inclusivity for people with disabilities in its ongoing research in Sedayu, Bantul, which began in 2024 and continues into 2025. Conducted in collaboration with the Pinilih Disability Community, the research uncovered gender and age disparities in waste management participation.
“The waste banks in Sedayu have been established and operated by local coordinators. However, the management remains predominantly handled by women who are proactive in addressing environmental concerns, with limited participation from men or individuals from a wider range of age groups,” explained Ida Ayu Triastuti, a UKDW researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine.
Data for the study were drawn from evaluations of UKDW’s community service programs (KKN) in Sedayu and student reflections on their engagement with the community. This data, collected via focus group discussions and specially designed questionnaires, demonstrated high reliability. Additionally, the research team held in-depth discussions with waste bank administrators to refine their findings and analysis further.
To address the identified challenges, UKDW developed creative educational approaches to engage younger generations. One key proposal is the creation of educational games focused on waste management. This initiative aims to raise environmental awareness across all age groups and encourage more inclusive participation.
The research also highlighted the critical need for an integrated medical record system for people with disabilities at the Pinilih Disability Wellness Center. In response, the UKDW research team designed a digital health record system that is accessible to both individuals with disabilities and healthcare providers. This system seeks to enhance healthcare accessibility and serves as a foundation for future inclusive health policy development.
Support from United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA), has bolstered UKDW’s ability to design and implement impactful community programs. By integrating education, research, and community service, UKDW continues to demonstrate its commitment to addressing societal challenges. This approach not only empowers communities, such as those with disabilities, but also cultivates socially conscious and empathetic students ready to serve society. [ia&drr]
