After a prolonged hiatus due to the pandemic, the Duta Voice Student Choir of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta, PSM Duta Voice, has made a triumphant return, securing Gold Medals in the Folklore and Mixed Choir categories at the prestigious 3rd Soegijapranata International Choir Competition. The event, held from November 14–17, 2024, featured 61 choirs from across Indonesia, making it one of the country’s most distinguished choral showcases.
Led by conductor Romadan Nur Huda, the 37-member team—comprising 29 UKDW students and alumni, along with 8 members of the Cantabile Chorale—delivered performances that captivated the judges and audiences alike. Their victory not only marks a comeback after nearly four years but also underscores their dedication and resilience in the face of challenges.
In the Folklore category, Duta Voice performed Cik Cik Periuk (arranged by Bagus Utomo) and Rambadia (arranged by M. Simbolon). The spirited renditions were enhanced by expressive choreography, bringing Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage to life. In the Mixed Choir category, their harmonious delivery of Ave Maria (arranged by Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger), Exulta Filia Sion (arranged by Raditya Daneswara), and I Love You (arranged by Collin McCook) showcased both technical skill and emotional depth.
Preparations for the competition were rigorous, with nightly rehearsals held at UKDW’s Lower Chapel, supported by the university’s resources and moral encouragement. The choir’s return to the competitive stage after the pandemic is a testament to the dedication of its members and the leadership of their conductor.
This accomplishment affirms Duta Voice’s ability to excel on the national stage while promoting cultural diversity through music. “This achievement is not just a comeback; it’s a celebration of our resilience and passion,” shared a member of the choir.
Congratulations to PSM Duta Voice on this outstanding achievement! May your success continue to inspire and bring pride to UKDW on even larger stages. [DV.Beatrice/trans.drr]
