The Head of the National Narcotics Agency for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (BNNP DIY), Brigadier General Pol. Andi Fairan, S.I.K., M.S.M., called on students at Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) to join forces in the fight against drug abuse. Speaking at a student orientation event, he emphasized the importance of active participation in campus initiatives to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and the various methods of drug distribution that threaten their community.
Citing the 2019 BNN-LIPI drug survey, Brigadier General Fairan highlighted that Yogyakarta ranks among the top five provinces in Indonesia with the highest drug use prevalence. As a hub for tourism and education, Yogyakarta has become a prime target for illegal drug activities. “Our situation in DIY is concerning, with drug use on the rise. We need students to take a stand and work together to make Indonesia drug-free,” he urged.
He further warned the UKDW academic community to remain vigilant, as drug syndicates often target insiders to facilitate drug sales. “Drug addiction often starts with curiosity. Electronic cigarettes and vape liquids, now part of the lifestyle in Indonesia, are increasingly being used to consume narcotics and psychotropics. Traffickers exploit this trend by selling liquid drugs disguised as vape products,” Fairan explained.
The Brigadier General’s remarks were part of the Academic Life Orientation (OKA) for new UKDW students, held at the Koinonia Auditorium on Thursday, August 22, 2024. The event also featured the reading of the Campus Clean from Drugs Declaration. [mpk/trans.drr]
