Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta partnered with Organisasi Harapan Nusantara (OHANA), supported by the Rotary Club of Yogyakarta Malioboro and Rotaract Yogyakarta Malioboro, to organize a series of activities titled ‘Step Out – 2023 Inclusion Bazaar’ from November 29 to December 1, 2023, at UKDW Yogyakarta. This event, commemorating the 16th Day of Anti-Violence Against Women (HAKTP) and International Day of Disabilities (HDI), focused on the theme ‘Empowered Women Without Violence.’ Additionally, it marked the soft launch of the UKDW Center for Disability Studies and Inclusive Design.
In her speech, UKDW Rector Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih, ST, MT, emphasized the university’s long-standing commitment to establishing a Center for Disability Studies and Inclusive Design. “Although challenging, we are determined to make it a reality. Inclusion and disability are integral to UKDW’s vision of becoming a Sustainable Entrepreneurial Research University with inclusive and sustainable values,” she stated. Dr. Wiyatiningsih also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Inclusive Thematic Service Learning Program and upcoming support programs for individuals with disabilities in Sedayu.
Gusti Kanjeng Bendara Raden Ayu Adipati Paku Alam, delivering the keynote speech at the seminar “Empowered Women without Violence,” underscored the dedication required for implementing activities and policies addressing anti-violence measures. “Sincerity is crucial, especially in assisting people with disabilities. Genuine dedication is essential for realizing our dreams,” remarked Gusti Kanjeng Bendara.
The event also featured presentations of research outcomes and products from UKDW’s Product Design Department (Despro) related to inclusivity and disability-friendly products. Lecturer Winta Adhitia Guspara, ST, M.Sn., discussed research on micro-mobility and the Detachable Electric Drive for Wheelchair, a product designed in collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology to enhance wheelchair users’ mobility. Student projects showcased innovative training tools for strengthening trapezius muscles, wheelchair-friendly sink designs for public spaces, aids for mentally disabled children, and ‘Saged Mbatik,’ a batik-making product for blind children.
