The 2023 City Thematic Service Learning Program, centered around the theme “Enriching the Community Through Reading Village Development,” took place from September to December 2023 at Kalurahan Demangan, Gondokusuman, Yogyakarta. UKDW officially concluded the participation of 55 students in this program on December 7, 2023, at the Office Hall of Kalurahan Demangan.

Sunu Sari Husada, S.I.P., the Head of Kalurahan Demangan, expressed gratitude to the service learning participants and neighborhood managers for their support throughout the program. He highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration between UKDW and Kalurahan Demangan, stating, “Kalurahan has entrusted the KKN students to UKDW for further education until graduation. We hope that after graduation, they will return to their respective areas, uphold the good reputation of UKDW and the City of Yogyakarta, and contribute to the development of their communities.”

Dr. Rosa Delima, the Vice Rector of Academic and Research of UKDW, also expressed appreciation for Kalurahan Demangan’s support in implementing the 2023 City Thematic Service Learning Program. She welcomed input from community members accompanying the students, emphasizing its importance for future improvements in both soft and hard skills. She hoped that the completed programs would prove beneficial and could be continued in future initiatives, offering valuable knowledge and experience to students as they enter the workforce.

The programs conducted by participating students in this program included activities such as promoting recycling practices, fostering children’s interest in reading through a storytelling competition, hosting digital marketing workshops, digitizing children’s records, managing waste, raising awareness for local businesses, creating eco-friendly bricks, educating children on various topics, including heroism, privacy, and cybercrime, developing websites, and organizing library resources.
