Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) community is deeply saddened by the passing of its first rector, Rev. Em. R. Judowibowo Poerwowidagdo, MA., Ph.D., on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 5:00 PM WIB, at the age of 82. Renowned as a visionary leader, he laid the cornerstone of UKDW’s journey toward becoming an esteemed university.
Fondly known as “Pak Yudo,” he became UKDW’s first rector following the institution’s transformation from the Duta Wacana Theological Seminary to a university in 1985.
A Visionary and Dedicated Leader
Pak Yudo’s colleagues remember him as a steadfast leader with clear convictions and tireless dedication, especially in fostering international collaborations. Ir. Jacobus B. Wiryawan, a collaborator from Yakkum in the early 1980s, described him as an inspirational figure.
“Our efforts were often exhausting, and not all were successful, but Pak Yudo consistently pursued his vision and mission, inspiring us younger colleagues,” he said.
In UKDW’s early years, Pak Yudo was instrumental in fundraising efforts both locally and internationally. “He was a leader brimming with ideas and a far-reaching vision that surpassed most people’s expectations,” Wiryawan added.
Pak Yudo is also remembered for his humility and openness. Prof. Yahya Wijaya, Ph.D., a lecturer at UKDW’s Faculty of Theology, shared that Pak Yudo responded to student criticism with grace and transparency. Another colleague, Drs. Purnawan Hardiyanto, M.Ec.Dev., highlighted his spirit of inclusivity, treating all colleagues as equals.
Drs. Bambang P. Hediono recounted how Pak Yudo often involved junior lecturers in international conferences to help them build networks. “Even with our limited English, he trusted us and guided us patiently,” he said.
In an official statement, UKDW Rector Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih, S.T., M.T., expressed heartfelt condolences, “We deeply mourn the loss of Rev. Em. R. Judowibowo Poerwowidagdo, MA., Ph.D. He was an inspiring leader who served with compassion and vision. His legacy will continue to guide us in sustaining UKDW’s mission.”
A Life Devoted to Education, Humanity, and Culture

He also participated in various non-formal education and training programs.
His contributions extended far beyond Indonesia. His intellect, diplomacy, and exemplary character earned him widespread trust and respect. In addition to teaching at the Duta Wacana Theological Seminary (which later became UKDW), he also lectured at Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
