The Centre of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Centrino) at Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta, in partnership with the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kanwil Kemenkumham) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), organized a Mobile Intellectual Property Clinic focused on “Patent Education for Academics in Higher Education.” The event took place on Friday, July 19, 2024, in the Rev. Dr. Tasdik Seminar Room.
Dr. Rosa Delima, S.Kom., M.Kom., Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Research at UKDW, emphasized in her opening remarks the critical role of innovation in fulfilling the university’s mission in education, research, and community service. “These innovations should be protected by intellectual property rights. Patenting these innovations will have a positive impact on the university,” she stated.
Dr. Haryo Dimasto Kristiyanto, Head of Centrino UKDW, described the seminar as a significant step towards ongoing collaboration with Kanwil Kemenkumham DIY. He stressed the importance of understanding and supporting inventors at UKDW to ensure their innovations can be commercialized and benefit the wider community.
Andi Maesara Prakosa, Project Manager at Centrino UKDW, highlighted that the event aimed to assist inventors with patent drafting and address challenges in patent applications. The keynote speaker, Antario Terryandana, a Junior Expert Patent Examiner in Mechanics from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), provided valuable insights.
Terry’s presentation covered key topics including the definition of patents, their validity period, the application process, legal foundations, examples of inventions, and the importance of patent registration. Participants also had the opportunity to consult with patent experts on various issues and received guidance on conducting patent searches using commonly used websites by examiners and inventors.
Winta Adhitia Guspara, an inventor and seminar participant, found the event highly beneficial. “We learned the necessary steps and corrections needed to ensure our work meets the criteria for granted patents,” he concluded. [Centrino.amp/trans.drr]
