Yogyakarta – Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) Yogyakarta is taking significant steps to create a more disability-friendly campus, aligning with its values of diversity and inclusion. Dr. Ing. Wiyatiningsih, the university’s rector, highlighted that these efforts reflect the institution’s commitment to its tagline: Sustainable Entrepreneurial Research University (SERU).

Despite being a Christian university, UKDW is open to students of all faiths, according to Wiyatiningsih. “Inclusivity is a key aspect of our sustainability efforts. We aim to be a campus that is welcoming to everyone,” she told detikJogja on July 5, 2024.

Wiyatiningsih emphasized that the university’s inclusivity extends beyond religious diversity to encompass various abilities. “Being a Christian university does not mean that only Christians can join. We are also committed to welcoming students with disabilities,” she said.

The rector acknowledged that while progress has been made, many campus facilities still need to be improved to fully accommodate students with disabilities. “Inclusivity covers a broad range of needs, including different physical and sensory abilities. Our campus facilities were designed before we fully considered accessibility, so we now need to upgrade them to ensure they are accessible to everyone,” she explained.

Wiyatiningsih stressed that facilities should be universally accessible rather than being tailored specifically for disabled individuals. “For example, during graduation ceremonies, we need to ensure that the stage is accessible to all students. It is important that these facilities are not designed in a way that segregates students with disabilities,” she said. “Our goal is to provide equal access for all, without creating any disparities.”

The university is committed to ongoing improvements to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. “Disabilities are varied, and we need to address each one appropriately. We are committed to enhancing our facilities and services to support as many needs as possible,” Wiyatiningsih concluded.
