Welcome to the captivating journey of our Summer Camp on Visual Ethnography! The program combines online and onsite sessions. In this immersive program, we invite you to embark on a unique exploration that merges the art of visual storytelling with the depth of ethnographic study. Over the course of this enriching experience, participants will delve into the vibrant world of cultural documentation, using photography, videography, and other visual mediums to uncover the stories and traditions that shape communities.

    Program Introduction

    In the Summer Camp “Visual Ethnography,” you will explore Yogyakarta and Bali for the onsite session. These two locations stand out as Indonesia’s premier tourism destinations, each offering a unique and enchanting experience. Participants from different countries will be grouped and work collaboratively on a group project related to visual ethnography. Each group can choose one of the following themes:

    • Local wisdom-based natural conservation
    • Local wisdom-based farming
    • Balinese and Yogyanese Culture
    • Traditional Market
    • Religious life
    • Community-based Tourism

    The objectives of the program are:

    • To facilitate students working together in an international environment.
    • To give insights on capturing the observed customs and ways of life in a methodological and structured way.
    • To harness student skill in solving the problem of remote collaboration & communication.
    • To improve students’ English proficiency.

    The expected outcomes are:

    • Intercultural communication competencies
    • Interdisciplinary problem-solving skill
    • Remote and virtual collaboration
    • Social and cultural intelligence

    This program is eligible for both undergraduate and graduate students.

    Depending on the university and specifically department policy, this program is designed to be equal to 2-3 credits (ECTS) and can be transferred as a Liberal Arts subject.

    Phase II: Summer Camp in Jogja (August 12 – 17, 2024)

    Phase III: Summer Camp in Bali (August 18 – 23, 2024)

    Phase IV: Online Collaboration (August 26 – September 6, 2024)

    • Participants arrival at Yogyakarta International Airport on August 11, 2024
    • Participants departure at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali on August 24, 2024

    ** Accommodation check-in on August 11, 2024, started at 2 pm local time.

    ** Accommodation check out on August 24, 2024, before 11.59 am local time.

    ** Early check-in or extension at the accommodation are at the participants’ own cost.

    ** Dinners are at your own cost, except for some dinners that have been arranged by the committee.
