Titled “DESA[I]NATION”, the Faculty of Architecture and Design of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (FAD UKDW) held FAD’s Week – a series of events to celebrate the anniversary of its three departments, i.e. 38th year of Architecture, 18th year of Product Design, and 8th year of Master of Architecture. The title of the event was inspired by people’s creativity to help and make things easier in their daily life. Geographical diversity also brings and helps to shape cultural diversity with its richness of knowledge and technology. Local technology is spread out and embodied in the local culture with its characteristic. Technology to build, technology to process the materials, and craftsmanship exist in each tribe and community where room for creativity is present.

“Across different regions and villages that still tightly hold culture and local wisdom, there are hidden potentials that we can find and develop according to current needs. The process of creating design and architecture essentially is cultivating cultural heritage and developing it thoroughly and deeply by bringing innovation that stays rooted in cultural values and real experience. In the end, the design will serve life, nurture and improve our humanity in harmony with nature. Developing local technology will support global society,” said Maria Kinanthi Sakti Ning Hapsari, S.Ars., M.Ars., one of the committee members who is also a lecturer of the Architecture Department at UKDW.

FAD’s Week which lasted from May to June 2023 was held in the form of appreciation, education, and promotional activities through an exhibition (that showcases the works and designs of the FAD community including alumni and partners), talkshow, photography workshop for senior high school student in DIY Region, cycling, alumni gathering, and finally the headline of FAD anniversary that was celebration on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Atrium Agape UKDW.

In her opening remark, the Rector of UKDW Dr.-Ing. Wiyatiningsih, S.T., M.T., highlighted the meaning of reaching the respective ages for the three departments. Reaching 38 years signifies a mature age, so the opportunity for Architecture Department to collaborate with other disciplines is widely open. Meanwhile, 18 years old is the age to make friends, so the Product Design Department is expected to find as many friends as possible. Lastly, The youngest 8-year-old Master of Architecture, that is in the growing stage expected to continue exploring the world. In line with that, the Dean of FAD UKDW Dr.-Ing. Ir. Winarna, M.A. gave advice to the three departments to be wiser and more patient as they grew.

FAD UKDW hoped to strengthen the sense of togetherness through the series of events and performances that can be enjoyed by all lecturers, staff, and students. The activities became a bridge to bring everyone from the three departments closer as part of one faculty – the Faculty of Architecture and Design.
